The concept of ‘Exit’ here refers to the decision to leave one’s home country because it offers no prospects. This has become the mass political phenomenon of our times and has for many become an alternative to acts of protest. Mass migration out of impoverished regions, such as Africa, has intensified not just because of climate change generating new conflicts in the countries of immigration as well as of emigration. A case in point is the hitherto inconceivable fragmentation of the European political landscape, impacted by new forms of twenty-first century migration. Worldwide social inequality has the effect of slicing in two north and south, and as a result is hardening migration regimes rather than softening them.
