Winnie spent all summer flying around San Francisco with Miss Drake, exploring the world of magic and gradually bringing the curmudgeonly dragon out of her shell. But now it's time to go back to school, and Winnie has enrolled as a new student at Spriggs Academy, where some students are "naturals" (humans) like her but most are magicals. Spriggs is an exciting place for a kid with no previous magical education. But between charms lessons, science class with Sir Isaac Newton, and field trips to visit the Loch Ness Monster, Winnie has to face all the usual challenges of being the new kid: making new friends, worrying that she won't fit in, and dealing with bullies—especially nasty Nanette, the niece of Miss Drake's rival Silana.

Meanwhile, Miss Drake is investigating an unpleasant development: Winnie's conniving grandfather Jarvis is still trying to take custody away from her mother. His thugs are constantly staked out at Winnie's house and school looking for any shred of evidence against Liza—like, for example, the dragon living in her basement. How can Miss Drake foil Jarvis's evil plans without revealing herself or the magical world where Winnie is finally beginning to feel at home?

Lighthearted episodes of unusual school lessons and field trips, illustrated by GrandPré's winsome spot art, are grounded by Miss Drake's more serious encounters with the goons . . . a gratifying development as this buoyant, fantastical series continues --- The Horn Book Review
