A TABLE BY THE WINDOW : A Novel of Family Secrets and Heirloom Recipes

Hillary Manton Lodge

For readers of Adriana Trigiani, a light-hearted drama that's full of family secrets, good food, and a chance at love.
Juliette D'Alisa decides to look for love online after the death of her grandmother. Tucked inside one of her grandmother's cookbooks, she discovers an antique photograph of a man who looks strikingly like her brother. The discovery of the man in the photo leads her to a string of mysteries, with a great-aunt's memories and letters left by her grandmother serving as the only clues. Juliette uncovers the evidence of a sweet romance as well as dark family secrets left dormant for over half a century. Juliette tries to keep her findings to herself, even as her brother pushes her to make a dramatic career change in order to open a restaurant with him. As Juliette's personal life unravels, she clings to Neil McLaren, a Memphis-based immunologist. Together, Juliette and Neil piece together her grandmother Mireille's story as they try to carve out a future for themselves. This is the first in a trilogy. Hillary Manton Lodge is the author of Plain Jayne, a Carol Award Finalist, and Simply Sara, an ECPA Bestselling book. She lives in Oregon.

Lodge (Plain Jayne) confects a yummy romance involving Juliette D'Alisa and her large Italian-French-American family of cooks and restaurateurs. Burned in a romance with her brother Nico's sous-chef, and washed out as a professional chef, Juliette is a food writer and critic who turns to online dating as a recipe for love. A major subplot involves a family secret. In the table willed to her by her late French grandmother, Juliette finds a photo of a handsome man whose resemblance to her brother Nico is too strong to ignore. Juliette attempts to unravel the mystery of the photo while keeping up with her demanding family, her heart's own demands, and the lure of her true calling. Lodge has put together a many-faceted plot, and not all the details are equally well researched. Yet she develops characters with heart, and her pacing sweeps the reader along. The novel is made for Food Network addicts—the recipes included are a true bonus, and they're easy to execute.
