AGAINST THE LAW

David Gordon

A Joe the Bouncer Thriller

Kicked out of both Harvard and the military, living with his grandmother while he overcomes his own demons, few would suspect that the city's most powerful criminals call on?Joe?Brody when they are desperate for help.??

This third installment in the Joe Brody series opens with Joe in the?poppy fields of Afghanistan, about to eliminate the ultimate source for heroin coming into New York and funding terror overseas. But as usual, things are not what they seem, and the trail leads back to?the streets of New York City, where a mysterious group of mercenaries are?seizing control of the drug trade and?launching a brutal city-wide gang war. Once again the city's underworld bosses turn to Joe, as their?“sheriff,” and once again Joe turns to his?friends—a hometown all-star team of thieves—and to Yelena, his lethal former lover and Russian partner in crime, to pull off a series of complex capers, from safe-cracking to hi-jacking?to?infiltrating secured?military sites.??

Meanwhile, FBI agent Donna Zamora joins forces with the NYPD to avert a new threat, all the while dipping her toes in the dating pool and deciding whether her inevitable showdown with Joe will end in bed or prison. As?their paths converge, and time runs out, they expose a high-level conspiracy, involving corporate and government power, to control US politics by manipulating terror, money and?media, all funded by drugs. The chase takes them from the streets of Spanish Harlem to a corporate high-rise, from a Matzoh warehouse in deepest Brooklyn to the 9/11 memorial, from a high-security military depot to a bloody Russian bathhouse, all while they themselves are being hunted by villains, by the law, and by the shadowy figures who use the law for evil,?leaving criminals to protect and?serve.??

“This one has everything, from a car chase that makes what Steve McQueen does with that Mustang in Bullitt seem like a Sunday drive, to a showdown in a Russian bathhouse that is part Marx Brothers and part Kill Bill. For anyone with a taste for blood-spattered comic capers featuring characters who vault off the page, Against the Law is an exquisite fever dream in Technicolor.” ?Booklist Starred Review “Everyone involved is heavily armed, ruthless, and possessed of an irresistibly off-kilter sense of humor Supercharged intrigue.” ?Kirkus Reviews “Gordon is fashioning himself an impressive crime world niche somewhere between Donald Westlake and Elmore Leonard, with his raucous, rollicking stories of New York City crime Come for the intricate, surprising crime scenarios; stay for the banter.” ?CrimeReads “Gordon has a knack for twisty story lines, nonstop action, and over-the-top sequences.” ?Publishers Weekly “David Gordon brings an outstanding new voice to the contemporary crime novel.” ?Robert Crais, author of detective fiction
