Al-Aqsa or Temple Mount
The eternal fight for Jerusalem's holy places
Summer 1981: In search of the lost Ark of the Covenant, Rabbi Jehuda Getz digs through the holy rock and comes across an old vault. No sooner has he climbed out than Muslims discover him in the side room of the mosque. This leads to fights, a general strike and almost to an international crisis. The dispute over the Temple Mount has long since reached its climax. A Jewish tunnel to the Wailing Wall caused uprisings in the 1990s. At the same time the Muslims, under Jewish protest, converted the underground "Stables of Solomon" into a winter mosque. Archaeologists were allowed to view 60 tons of excavated material on a rubble heap. They are not allowed to dig. Based on numerous Hebrew and Arabic sources, Joseph Croitoru tells the dramatic story of a struggle that has been charged with religious and political expectations of salvation since ancient times. Unfortunatelly today there is less than ever a solution in sight.
