Alfred Ollivant's

Lydia Davis

BOB; SON OF BATTLE

Alfred Ollivant's children's classic ( 1898) set in northern England about a collie suspected of killing sheep has enjoyed a great popularity among readers despite it's abundant use of the Cumbrian dialect in the novel's dialogue.

One of the foremost American short story writers and a translator from the French for Flaubert and Proust, Lydia Davis, always loved this book and she set herself to the task of translating the story from English into English so that today's reader may no longer be deterred by the difficulties of language and also enjoy this wonderful and universal story. This edition contains an Afterword by Lydia Davis in which she describes her fascination with this novel and her motivation and task to render the beauty of this book into a more modern version of English. The rights to the original novel are in public domain.
