ALPACA MY BAGS

Jenny Goebel

Amelia's parents and two older brothers are adventure junkies. For as long as she can remember, she's bounced from town to town, and from one experience to the next. She's been surfing in California, repelling in Utah, and now her family has landed in a small Colorado mountain town where they plan to hike and ski. The only problem is: Amelia doesn't feel the same rush of excitement when faced with danger. In fact, she's not even brave enough to stand up for herself when she doesn't fit in at her new school.

After being teased to the point of tears, Amelia is approached by a woman who runs a small alpaca store nearby. Amelia visits the store and finds the super soft scarfs and sweaters made from alpaca fleece irresistible. The kind store owner tells Amelia about the alpaca ranch her family operates just outside of town. In a rare display of courage, Amelia volunteers to help out at the ranch.

She couldn't be more excited to spend time with the awkwardly adorable creatures. Moving around so much has made Amelia shy away from reaching out to her peers, but the connection she feels with the alpacas makes her realize how lonely she feels at school all day. She begins to engage with some of her classmates and is learning to shake off the cruel comments of others. But her fledgling bravery is tested when one of her tormentor's reckless behavior sparks a wildfire near the ranch. Amelia must overcome her fears and lead the alpacas through the woods to a nearby lake where they'll be safe from the engulfing flames.
