AN UNKINDNESS OF GHOSTS
A truly phenomenal, breathtaking debut science fiction novel of the highest order.
Featuring the fierce, brilliant, but somewhat unstable Aster, An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon is a high-concept science fiction novel set on a futuristic space colony that is racially segregated with the darker skinned inhabitants, like Aster, living in slum-like conditions on the lower decks.
Aster is torn between her desire to know more about her mother—a scientist who died when Aster was a baby—and her equally strong desire to murder the incoming sovereign leader, who Aster has a personal vendetta against. When Aster discovers, while deciphering her mother’s journals, that her mother was working on plans to build a space shuttle to return to planet earth, she must choose between life—attempting to build the shuttle—and death—killing the ship’s leader (which will inevitably be a death sentence for Aster).
Stunningly written, An Unkindness of Ghosts will appeal to fans of Octavia Butler, Emily St. John Mandel, and TV’s Battlestar Galactica.
Rivers Solomon graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and holds an MFA in Fiction Writing from the Michener Center for Writers. Though originally from the United States, they currently live in Cambridge, UK, with their family.
