At Night, When the Hamster Awakes

While we human beings sleep at night, many animals only really become wide-awake when darkness falls. They set off in search of food, dance in the garden as bright dots of light or strike up a concert. In this amusing rhyming non-fiction picture book, children follow fifteen of our native animals such as the hamster, hedgehog, owl, bat or badger on their travels through the night and receive a very special poetic introduction to the activities of nocturnal animals.

Fox peeps out, the shadows falling,

Stops to sniff the air, and then,

All is silent, night is calling,

Silently he leaves his den.

Time to hunt! And padding forwards,

Over roots and moss and leaves,

Left and right through trees and bushes

Through the peaceful wood he weaves.
