BLOOD OF DRAGONS (Rain Wild Chronicles4)
Hobb has added third and fourth volumes of this brilliant, complex tale of human outcasts and the dangerous, demanding dragons with which they bond, taking readers deeper into the Elderling city of Kelsinga and the dreaded and mysterious realm of Chalced.
At sixteen, Thymara is well past the marriageable age in the Rain Wilds. Born with more than her share of the unusual physical attributes that mark her people, she would have been left to die as an infant were it not for her father's intervention. Now he keeps her close as they work together harvesting high in the forest canopy. Though Thymara earns her keep and more, her mother resents her very presence.
On the banks of the Rain River, a new generation of dragons has hatched. But these dragons are hardly the beings of legend. Stunted, deformed, and unable to fly, they're a burden on the societies that promised to help them. The Rain Wilds Council's solution is to mount an expedition to move the dragons to more suitable hunting grounds - grounds that may prove rich with treasure for humankind if the rumors of an Eldering city, long abandoned, prove true. Thymara and other heavily Changed Rain Wilds youth are recruited to travel upriver on the unusual liveship barge Tarman, whose captain has secrets of his own.
In Bingtown, Alise Kincarron, like Thymara, is considered a spinster. A plain studious girl, she's surprised when a marriage offer suddenly comes from handsome Hest Finbok, a wealthy trader. She soon learns that for Hest marriage is a practicality and nothing more. Lonely Alise uses the distance from her husband to further her lifelong study of dragons and Elderlings, determined to maybe, one day, see dragons for herself. The expedition lures her, too, to make the difficult trip into wild, unchartered land. She is followed upriver not only by her greedy, treacherous husband, but by cut-throat pirates from Chalced who will make any sacrifice to gain a piece of dragon flesh, which they consider to have magical healing powers.
But getting there is only half the journey. In City of Dragons and Blood of Dragons, rivalries and affections grow and change as threats multiply and the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra begins to yield up its secrets.
