CEO EXCELLENCE

Vikram Malhotra Scott Keller Carolyn Dewar

The Six Mindsets That Distinguish the Best Leaders from the Rest

For readers of Simon Sinek's Leaders Eat Last and Ray Dalio's Principles, this deep dive into how the best CEO's do their jobs, from the world's most influential consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, is based on extensive interviews with the 21st century's most effective corporate leaders.
CEO at any of the world's largest companies is one of the most challenging, mysterious, misunderstood, and important roles in the world today. The CEOs of the Fortune 500 alone represent two-thirds of U.S GDP, oversee over $14 trillion in revenues, and are responsible for the employment of 28.7 million people.

Even when they reach the position of CEO, very few excel in the role. Thirty percent of Fortune 500 CEOs last fewer than three years, and two out of five new CEOs are perceived to be failing within eighteen months of taking the job. A select few, however, rise to become the best of the best - creating superior value for their stakeholders while role modeling servant leadership.

In CEO Excellence, the authors, all experienced consultants at world famous McKinsey & Company, have used a rigorous method to identify the best CEOs of the 21st century. Starting with a pool of 2,000 public company CEOs, the top 200 were eventually selected, and a statistically valid sampling of those - sixty-five - agreed to multi-hour interviews. Based on these in-depth interviews, CEO Excellence not only demystifies the role itself, but also the mindsets and actions that deliver outsized performance. The research effort has yielded a treasure trove of practical insights embedded in compelling stories.
