CHILDREN OF RAGNAROK

Cinda Williams Chima

The Runestone Saga Book #1

Ever since Ragnarok - the great war between the gods and the forces of chaos - the gods have faded and the human realm of The Midlands has become a world in decline, where, bereft of magic, most people lead lives of want and desperation.

On the surface, sixteen-year-old Eiric Halvorsen is among the luckier ones. Between fishing, summer raiding, and working his modir's farm, Eiric has helped the family remain relatively prosperous. But darkness descends on the family in the form of a new stepfadir who wants the farm more than he wants Eiric's modir. In a midwinter struggle with his wicked stepfadir, Eiric and his weirdling systir Liv defeat the stepfadir but fail to save their modir's life. Now Eiric stands to lose everything when a local counsel tries and convicts him of murdering his modir and stepfadir. Also at risk is Liv, whose interest in the old magic has made her a figure of suspicion. Then a powerful Jarl steps in. He will pay the blood price if Eiric agrees to lead a mission to the hidden, fabled Temple at the Grove - the rich stronghold of the wyrdspinners, the last practitioners of sorcery.

Meanwhile, in a nearby harbor town, spellsinger, musician, and runecaster Reggin Eiklund has taken up residence in a tavern, trading on her old knowledge for room and board and any silver pieces she can cajole from her audience. Secretly Reggin is a thrall to a fire demon, and she has spent her life traveling from town to town, performing for the benefit of her master, Asger, a brutal creature she is desperate to escape. After one uncanny performance that amazes even Reggin herself, two wyrdspinners in the audience make her an irresistible offer: return with them to the Temple at the Grove to be trained in old magic, forever free of Asger.

Eiric, Liv, and Reggin's journeys converge in New Jotunheim, the site of the Temple at the Grove, a seeming paradise fueled by magic. But they soon realize that a great evil lurks beneath the dazzling surface, and that old betrayals and long-held grudges may fuel another cataclysmic war. With greater forces starting to stir and return, it will require every gift and weapon at their command to prevent it.
