CURED
The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys
For the first time in the band’s nearly forty–year history, here is the story of The Cure—virtual inventors of alternative music—from someone who was there at the very beginning: Lol Tolhurst, the band’s co–founder, co–songwriter, and lifelong friend of lead singer Robert Smith.
Smith prefers to let the band’s songs speak for themselves, making CURED the only insider memoir of the group that has helped generations navigate their angst–filled teen years. From Smith and Tolhurst’s early childhood to the band’s heyday, CURED illuminates and surprises in equal measure. Tolhurst mines the band’s peak years (1976–1989) to produce never–before–told tales of The Cure, shining a light on the mercurial and fascinating Robert Smith. Revealing the highs and lows in a lifelong relationship, CURED is a touching personal odyssey of triumph, despair, and ultimately understanding and redemption.
Lovingly written and beautifully atmospheric, CURED is not a history of the band. It’s not a biography of Robert Smith or an autobiography about Lol. It’s not a hagiography or scandalous tell-all. It’s none of those things. Rather, it’s all of those things, told through the lens of Lol’s friendship with Robert. CURED is a real and honest look at a rock n’roll friendship. This is not a rock memoir per se, but the story of two English lads who changed pop culture together.
Born twenty miles south of London, Lol Tolhurst is one of the founding members of The Cure. As a drummer and keyboardist for the band, he helped to write and record Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, and the multi-platinum Disintegration. After leaving The Cure, Lol continued to work in other musical projects, and is currently a member of the band Levinhurst with his wife Cindy Levinson. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
