Rome's Wars against Carthage

Summer 216 B.C. - what began 50 years earlier as a dispute between Rome and Carthage over Sicily threatens to end in a total catastrophe for the city on the Tiber: The Carthaginian Hannibal has crossed the Alps in a strategic coup, stands in northern Italy and decimates the Roman troops in a series of battles. The name CANNAE, where at least 50,000 legionnaires were killed, is like a warning sign for Rome.

When the three so-called Punic Wars were fought, Carthage lays in ruins. The ancient Phoenician foundation in North Africa is said to have burned for seventeen days after the Roman commander-in-chief Scipio took it. Carthage is completely destroyed, its site cursed. The surviving inhabitants are sold into slavery. For Rome, however, the rise to a world empire begins.

With critical view of sources, research and backgrounds Michael Sommer illuminates the causes, course and consequences of the Roman-Carthaginian conflict - a didactic play about the timeless questions of power, rivalry and violence!
