DEEP DARK FEARS

Fran Krause

A charmingly creepy collection of 100 illustrated comics based on idiosyncratic and universal "deep dark fears."
We all have strange, irrational fears—from seeing ghosts in the bedroom mirror to being sucked into a mall escalator or finding yourself miles below the ocean's surface on the deck of a sunken ship. In Deep Dark Fears, animator, illustrator, and cartoonist Fran Krause brings these fears to life in 101 vividly illustrated comics inspired by his wildly popular web comic and based on real fears submitted by online readers.

Deep Dark Fears explores our gruesome, hilarious, and bizarre anxieties, revealing a primal part of our humanity and highlighting both our idiosyncrasies and our similarities. This devilishly humorous guide explores our drive to experience and share the wonders of the world and the dangers lurking around every corner.

FRAN KRAUSE is an animator and cartoonist. He is currently a teacher in the Character Animation Program at CalArts, creator of several cartoons, and the creator of the Deep Dark Fears web comic series. He lives in Los Angeles.

Deep Dark Fears was named Best of 2015 by NPR’s Book Concierge

Deep Dark Fears is a terrifying and funny treasury of secret, irrational fears we obsess over but are too embarrassed to admit. I can't imagine reading this book home alone at night without completely scaring myself to death.

The great thing about Deep Dark Fears is that you’ll find that you’re not the only one with arguably irrational fears; the downside is you’ll discover way more to be afraid of.

My deep dark fear, as I read this book, was that that on the very next page I'd see my own personal fear, vividly illustrated—I had a knot in my stomach, bracing myself for it! When I got to the end and didn't see it, I grew a whole new fear! Does no one share my deep dark fear? Fran Krause has tapped into the impossible space between you and the worst thing that could happen. Whatever lives in there deserves some company! Isn't it comforting to know there are things you never even thought to be afraid of? Well... you'll think to be afraid of them now.

Fran Krause’s book confirms your worst fears, reminds you of fears you forgot you had, and gives you lots of new ones about things you hadn't even thought of yet. You would think that illustrating fears so beautifully would take the edge off of them, but it turns out that's not true. They are still deeply terrifying and great.
