DIAMOND PARK

Phillippe Diederich

Rafael, his friends all him Flaco, isn't the kind of kid who gets in trouble. He doesn't want to give his mom or his aunt Ana Flor any grief - they've had enough since his cousin Carlos died serving in the military. But he finds a whole lot more trouble than he bargained for when he and his friends Tiny, Magaña, and Susi go down to Diamond Park to pick up a car. Not just any car - a 1959 Impala, a dream car. When Susi is accused of involvement in a knifing, and Tiny's undocumented family has to disappear to avoid ICE, Flaco and Magaña head south to set things right. In a wildly impetuous move, they go to Mexico hunting for Anaconda, the real criminal, to clear Susi's name and in a breathtaking, seat-of-your-pants adventure they nab him. In Flaco, Phillippe Diederich has created an unforgettable character—a modern Mexican-American kid, who loves his family and who's ready to go after the things he wants in life. He may need some pushing from his overly confident friend Magaña, but you know he's going to get there in the end.

Diamond Park tackles tough issues: poverty, addiction, uncertainty, and violence. But it also offers very real hope of a better future, the strength of friendship, the love of family. Ultimately, this is a story of a young man coming into manhood, of deciding who he is, and of the vibrant community in which he lives and grows. All that, and with the terrific pacing and storyline of a suspense novel

Like the works of Texas writers Rolando Hinojosa and Oscar Casares, Diamond Park genuinely reflects the Texican experience (Texas-Mexican for the uninitiated) that one rarely sees in novels. As someone who grew up in the same area of town that Mr. Diederich writes about, I identified and connected with each one of the characters in Diamond Park. This book is like being back home in Tejas. -- Alvaro Saar Rios, playwright, author of Luchadora!
