Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Wolfgang Huber

On the Road to Freedom - A Portrait

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the most powerful theologians of the 20th century. His resistance against Hitler inspired protest movements against oppression and inequality worldwide. His letters from prison were seen as a new beginning for theology. Wolfgang Huber places Bonhoeffer's thinking at the centre of his wonderfully concise portrait and makes it clear why the courageous decisions of this exceptional theologian can still be an incentive today.

In June 1939 Dietrich Bonhoeffer was offered a job in New York, but the young theologian decided against exile. Shortly before the beginning of the Second World War he returned to Berlin to fight for a better Germany. A period of conspiracy, camouflage, imprisonment, loneliness and confidence follows. Wolfgang Huber explains why these existential conditions inspired him his most popular writings, such as his "Ethics" and his "Resistance and Surrender". The new approaches of the great "unfinished" theologian, who was executed on the 9th of April 1945 at Hitler's personal order, continues to encourage people to believe and act consequently.
