The Wonderfully Weird History and Science of Masturbation

Despite decades of medical and psychological research confirming masturbation is healthy from uterus to coffin, the solo act remains shrouded in taboo, myths, and pseudoscience perpetuated by reactionaries who believe self-pleasure will unravel everything in a culture they hold dear. DIY is an examination of the crusaders on a campaign to suppress masturbation, the sex educators fighting back with science, and the everyday people stuck in the middle of these conflicting messages about what constitutes healthy self-pleasure.
Exploring topics such as normative behaviors during childhood, the NoFap and semen retention movements, the moral panic over masturbation addiction, sex dolls and robots, porn and fantasy, and how to turn your cremated remains into a vibrator for your grieving widow, DIY unapologetically critiques the individuals and systems that have sought to control masturbation, and overviews the scientific literature and clinical recommendations on how masturbation is a healthy practice for all. As an associate professor of clinical psychology and sexuality studies at Minnesota State University, author Dr. Eric Sprankle brings over a decade of experience as an educator, researcher, and therapist challenging sexual myths and moral panics through the promotion of sexual science. Dr. Eric Sprankle is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and Co-Director of the Sexuality Studies program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist and an AASECT-certified sex therapist affiliated with the Minnesota Sexual Health Institute. He currently leads the Sexual Health Research Team at Minnesota State examining the intersections of sexuality, stigma, and Satanism, and has published articles on the effects of sexually explicit material, older adult sexuality, sex worker affirmative therapy, and Satanic sexuality.

A needed and timely defense of a necessary and timeless activity.

Get out the lotion and tissues! Charge your vibrator! Masturbation is THE most frequent sexual behavior in humans. Across their lives, people masturbate far more frequently than they have partnered sex. Dr. Sprankle dives, umm, headfirst, into what we know about erotic self-pleasure, exposing all of the dirty secrets about masturbation that THEY want you to not know about. This is THE book to keep on your nightstand. Seriously.

Chock-full of history, science, and Dr. Sprankle's characteristic humor, this book will inform, educate, and entertain you. Most important, from my vantage point as a sex educator and therapist, it will also put to bed all the historical and current falsehoods about masturbation that have too many people either trying to refrain or doing it with shame. Reading this book will set you free from unnecessary guilt about a natural - and pleasurable - human behavior.

I could write a book about masturbation. A lot of people could. But Dr. Eric Sprankle, a clinical psychologist and expert in the subject, actually has. And though it is an epic, it only requires one hand to read it.

DIY: THE WONDERFULLY WEIRD HISTORY AND SCIENCE OF MASTURBATION is equal parts fascinating and fun. Sprankle serves a perfect blend of history, research, and clinical insight that debunks some of the wackiest myths and misconceptions about self-pleasure. Readers will walk away informed and empoweredand able to take their sexuality in their own hands.
