DOG SHOW

Pamela Sztybel Billy Collins

Poems

In this special collection of poems inspired by dogs, former U.S. Poet Laureate and New York Times bestselling author Billy Collins captures the essence and mystery of our beloved companionsfeaturing striking canine portraits in watercolors by Pamela Sztybel
Billy Collins's Dog Show celebrates the joy of our canine best friends, honoring the love we feel for the animals who play such vital roles in our lives. In twenty-five poems, Collins distills the many ways dogs warm our hearts, from the happiness we experience as we watch a dog run unencumbered by our burdens, to the silliness of cradling a dog in our arms as we step on the scale together. Turning his inimitable eye and ear to the complexities of dog behavior, Collins ponders all that these winning creatures give us and what we learn from them about ourselves.

For more than four decades Collins has delighted readers with his insight, wit, and clear poetic voice. In Dog Show, "America's favorite poet" (The Wall Street Journal) illuminates America's favorite pet (sorry, cat lovers). Accompanied by Pamela Sztybel's watercolors, which effortlessly depict a dog's humble grace, Dog Show reveals the profound role these majestic animals play in our lives and the meaning they give us.

Billy Collins is the author of fifteen collections of poetry, including Sailing Alone Around the Room, Aimless Love and, most recently, Water, Water. He served two terms as United State Poet Laureate and is a former Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College and New York State Poet. He is a New York Public Library Literary Lion and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is currently "between dogs," his most recent an Australian Shepherd mix named Jeannine. He lives in Winter Park, Florida, with his wife Suzannah.

Pamela Sztybel is a painter who divides her time between New York City and Bridgewater, Connecticut. She has a dog named Jack.

[Collins] takes the mundane thing and shows you its mystery. And he takes the mysterious and strips it naked.

What Collins does best is turn an apparently simple phrase into a numinous moment.

Luring his readers into the poem with humor, Mr. Collins leads them unwittingly into deeper, more serious places, a kind of journey from the familiar or quirky to unexpected territory, sometimes tender, often profound.

It is difficult not to be charmed by Collins, and that in itself is a remarkable literary accomplishment.

[Collins] writes about small pleasures and quotidian details, in direct language and familiar images. His poems have humor and buried twinges; what seems simple touches a complex, and even somber, theme.

Collins's most delightful poems take their idiosyncratic flight from standard props: table, light, kitchen counter, car . . . One appeal of the typical Collins poem is that it's less able to help you memorize it than to help you to remember, for a little while anyway, your own life.

Billy Collins writes in an original way about all manner of ordinary things and situations with both humor and a surprising contemplative twist.

The poetry of Billy Collins has a kindness that glitters with hard truth.
