DWELL
A passionate and affecting debut novel set in the aftermath of WW1, DWELL tells the story of a secret relationship between a traumatised former soldier and the male medical student hoping to help him
1919, England Albert Mere enlisted underage to escape an abusive and deprived childhood, but he has been left haunted by his experience of the war and by his mistreatment by his superiors. When he takes a job as a gardener at private Whitethorne School, his unusual behaviour is noticed by one of the privileged students, aspiring doctor Edgar Lancaster. Edgar's interest and sympathy for Albert quickly deepens into a heartfelt attraction, one which is warily reciprocated by Albert.
After Whitethorne, Albert and Edgar tentatively begin to find a way to be together, and bridge their divides of class, education and money. All the time they must keep their relationship a closely-guarded secret from family, friends and the authorities. But when Albert's menacing former sergeant re-emerges in Albert's life, he threatens his hardwon happiness. Albert is again confronted with his past, one he has felt unable to share with Edgar for fear of losing him. Can Albert find the strength to trust Edgar with the truth?
A moving and evocative and coming-of-age and LGBT+ love story, exploring themes of trauma, healing and belonging. DWELL is perfect for readers of Patrick Gale, Sarah Winman and Tomasz Jedrowski.
