ENDING PARKINSON'S DISEASE

Bastiaan Bloem Michael S. Okun Todd Sherer Ray Dorsey

A Prescription for Action

Neurological disorders are now the world's leading source of disability, and the fastest growing of these disorders is Parkinson's disease. Between 1990 and 2015 the number of people with Parkinson's doubled to over 6 million and is projected to double again by 2040. The causes are shocking, and the remedies are woefully out of date and ineffective.
It's time to take action. We need widespread education about the pandemic, better and more broadly available care, support for our affected friends and family members, and change from the companies and government agencies currently abdicating their responsibilities. In ENDING PARKINSON'S DISEASE, four of the top researchers and advocates in the field offer a bold but actionable plan to Prevent, Advocate, Care, Treat (PACT) one of the great health challenges of our time. They gather the expertise of leading researchers and clinicians to tell the full story of how we got here, what it means, and what we can do about it. This is a critical guide for anyone who has or could be touched by this disease, from patients, to families, to healthcare providers, politicians, and activists.

Ray Dorsey is the David M. Levy Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester. For the past decade, he has pioneered technology to care for individuals with and measure the features of Parkinson's disease. His research has been published in the leading neurology, medical, and economic journals, and been featured on NPR and in the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times.

Todd Sherer is the chief executive officer of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the largest and most highly respected private funder of Parkinson's disease research in the world.

Michael S. Okun is the chair and the Adelaide Lackner Professor of Neurology at the University of Florida. Michael is one of the world's leading Parkinson's disease researchers who has advanced surgical treatments.

Bastiaan Bloem is a professor of neurology and the Medical Director at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands. In 2004, with Dr. Marten Munneke, Bas created ParkinsonNet, the largest integrated care program for Parkinson's patients.

This book is a must-read for all of us who are or might be affected. It pulls no punches with regard to the seriousness of this emerging pandemic, and its common-sense environmental approaches and precautions, if implemented, will abate the spread of this insidious disease.
