FAIR COIN

E. C. Myers

Winner of the 2012 Nebula/Andre Norton Award

Seventeen-year-old Ephraim comes home from school one day to find his mother slumped over their kitchen table, pills scattered around her. He learns that she tried to kill herself after a boy who looks exactly like him was run over by a bus. The other boy had Ephraim's library card in his wallet and an impossible coin -- a state quarter for a state that doesn't exist.

Ephraim receives a note that tells him to make a wish and flip the coin. He does, skeptically, and suddenly his mom is healed, with no memory of her ordeal. He uses the coin to grant more wishes, but with each use, the world changes in unexpected and sometimes disastrous ways. Before long, Ephraim and his friends find themselves on a dangerous odyssey through parallel worlds, trying to undo the damage they've caused.
