Fear and Power

Rainer Mausfeld

Power Techniques to Generate Fear in Capitalist Democracies

Fear and power are closely linked to the political and social sphere. Unlike the oppressed people, the people who have power have many advantages. Generating public fear is a common technique within the meritocracy to maintain the capitalist democracy. Rainer Mausfeld’s previous book “Silence of the Lambs. How the Power Elite and Neoliberalism Destroy Our Society” (Original title: “Warum schweigen die Lämmer?”), a brilliant and enlightening book, became a bestseller.

Comments

“To generate fear is an efficient method to control human behavior, and to secure and develop power. The author, a renowned professor, explains the common techniques. Only those who know the techniques can evade them.”

“Mausfeld elucidates on how much of a role fear plays as a means to exercise power in our political system, and on how an extremely destructive ideology (that of the ‘entrepreneurial self’) determines our whole way of thinking within society.“

“His main topic is the mechanisms by which the fear generated by capitalism is reinforced and abused as an instrument of elite rule.”

“The elites make use of traditional techniques to generate fear in order to cover up the gap between democratic rhetorics and capitalist reality.”

“Rainer Mausfeld, who has already published ‘Why Are the Lambs Silent?’ as a brilliant and informative piece of work already, provides an extremely important extension with this book, which is more than necessary.”
