FIREKEEPER'S DAUGHTER
A thrilling contemporary debut novel introducing an indigenous "Veronica Mars": when 18-year old Daunis witnesses the murder of a loved one, she must use her science geekery and knowledge about her Ojibwe culture to protect her tribal community before she loses anyone else.
Daunis's mixed heritage and unenrolled tribal status have always made her feel like an outsider both in her hometown and on the nearby Indian reservation. Now, instead of spending the summer after high school anticipating her freshman year of college, valedictorian Daunis prepares for a different future: staying home to care for her emotionally fragile mother after back-to-back family tragedies. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, her high school hockey superstar brother's newest teammate.
Everything changes though when Daunis witnesses a murder and she is suddenly thrust into the thick of a drug ring investigation and learns of corruption, deception and betrayal from the people closest to her and those she'd least suspect. Daunis must decide what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) when she is forced to choose between saving those she loves, helping the FBI, and protecting the tribal community.
Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She was selected as an emerging Young Adult writer in the 2019 We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) Mentorship Program, chosen to attend the upcoming Tin House YA Writers Workshop and will be featured on an upcoming episode of the podcast "88 Cups of Tea." Angeline is the Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Her career has focused on improving the education of Native American students at the tribal, state, regional, and national levels. She is a frequent public speaker about Indian education, youth suicide prevention, student assessment data, and tribal community empowerment. She lives and works in the Washington, D.C. area, but her home will always be on Sugar Island.
