FLICKERING

Pattiann Rogers

This is a new collection of poems from a writer whose "celebrations of science and approachable yet profound spiritual connection to the Earth delight, entertain, and elevate" (The Poetry Foundation).
In FLICKERING, her fifteenth collection, Rogers offers more lyrical, celebratory, thickly textured poems of radiant artistry, all inspired by the natural world. The consistent theme of these new poems is the very breadth the universe itself, a quality that Rogers is uniquely suited to convey. A flickering flame is unpredictable, unsteady, boisterous, lethargic, near extinction - as are many other natural phenomena that Rogers so beautifully delineates in this new work.

Denise Levertov has called the poet Pattiann Rogers "a visionary of reality, perceiving the material world with such intensity of response that impulse, intention, meaning, interconnections beyond the skin of appearance are revealed." Rogers, who in 2018 received the John Burroughs Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Nature Poetry, has won acclaim as one of the most original voices in contemporary American poetry; the critic John Buttel has written that her work "celebrates and embraces the physical, sensual world - its plentitude, fecundity, voluptuousness, and variety."

Pattiann Rogers has published fifteen collections of poetry and two book-length essay collections, The Dream of the Marsh Wren and The Grand Array: Writings on Nature, Science, and Spirit. She is the recipient of two NEA grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a 2005 Literary Award in Poetry from the Lannan Foundation. In 2018 she was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Nature Poetry.
