GETAWAY

Zoje Stage

It was supposed to be the perfect getaway...
Imogen, Beck, and Tilda have been friends since high school. Once an inseparable trio, the three have spent the last twenty years drifting in different directions - Beck into the sterile, pragmatic world of medicine, Tilda into a life of Insta-fame and #sponcon, and Imogen into a solitary, less-than-lucrative writing career. So when the women get the chance to reunite and hike the Grand Canyon's notorious Hermit Trail together, they jump at the opportunity. Camping, bonding, sleeping under the stars... what could possibly go wrong? As the women travel deeper into the wilds of Colorado, long-buried secrets begin to bubble to the surface. And when supplies start to go missing from their camp and footprints appear overnight, it soon becomes clear that secrets aren't the only thing they're being stalked by. A cinematic, terrifying story of survival, female friendship, and unspeakable evil, Getaway is another riveting novel from a writer whose powers are growing book to book. Zoje Stage is the USA Today and international bestselling author of Baby Teeth. Additionally, Baby Teeth went on to become a People "Book of the Week", and was voted by Barnes & Noble, GoodReads, and Forbes as one of the best horror books of 2018. It was optioned for film by Village Roadshow/Valparaiso Pictures. She lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

This bildungsroman, mixed with a dark fairy tale and a touch of Kate DiCamillo's The Tale of Despereaux, makes Stage's third triumph, following Wonderland (2020) and Baby Teeth (2018). Recommend as women's fiction as well as psychological suspense.

In Zoje Stage's masterful, deft hands, a girlfriends' backpacking trip becomes, instead, a nightmarish descent into unimaginable terror. Chilling, thrilling, spine-tinglingly addictive, and unbelievably tense, I held my breath as I raced through the last hundred pages, desperate to find out what was going to happen. An absolute thrill-ride and a deep dive into female friendship, Getaway deserves to be the top of your summer reading list!

Three friends, the Grand Canyon, a week-long trip: what could go wrong? The blade of dread is at your carotid on every page of Getaway. I loved reading Stage's latest and being taken on this slow, steady descent into hell.

...Author Zoje Stage (Baby Teeth) gives this horror-tinged thriller emotional depth through a careful layering of big themes and tiny details. Stage has hiked the Grand Canyon herself, and her characters' descriptions of the hike have an immersive, absorbing effect. The violence in this novel is truly frightening, more so because of how it contrasts with the beauty of the canyon's vistas, sounds and silences... Read more...

"You can only control your own life and what you do. Tomorrow isn't here. We just have today. Today, we're fine." Author of Baby Teeth Zoje Stage joins Zibby to discuss her latest novel, Getaway, which is not about a breezy vacation as the title may suggest. Zoje shares how the trauma she endured as a resident of Squirrel Hill - the neighborhood that was home to the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting - inspired the story's psychological and religious themes, and the parts of herself that she sees in her characters. Check out Zibby and Kyle's appearance on Good Day LA where they recommended this book here. Read more...

Getaway is a dazzling hunt and hide chase through the Grand Canyon, as white-hot and and pulsing as the Arizona sun. Old wounds and secrets heighten tensions between two sisters and their childhood friend when the three head out on a camping trip to regroup, re-bond, and rediscover. But their volcanic pasts are nothing compared to what they encounter, which threads their fates together. Sure to be a tent-pole entry in the burgeoning vacation lit sub-genre, Zoje Stage masterfully displays what happens when female friendship becomes the most powerful weapon in a wilderness fight for survival.

Getaway feels like 127 Hours meets The Descent and I'm shocked that publishers are not using these comparisons already. In Zoje Stage's latest delightfully disturbing novel, two best friends head into the Grand Canyon's deepest recesses in an adventure that quickly becomes a nightmare. Read more...

"It was supposed to be the perfect week away..." reads the ominous tagline for Stage's latest thrill-ride. The once-tight trio has drifted into different directions - geographically and emotionally - ever since a terrible event (dubbed "The Thing") happened one night in college. Instead of a relaxing escape into nature, they find themselves on a descent into terror as it becomes unnervingly clear they're not alone on the trail. You won't blink until you read the last line. Tense and terrifying, GETAWAY is an extraordinary work of suspense. Stage delivers both a harrowing, heart-pounding thrill ride and an astute exploration of trauma, regret, compassion, and perseverance.

...Stage's characters speak to the tensions between women that can arise from the pressure to be constantly nice and docile and never stir up conflict - the burden to mask true feelings, jealousy, long-held resentments - and amps them up... Fans of Sarah Langan, Tana French, or Scott Smith's The Ruins will devour this slow-burning psychological thrill ride.
