from the author of the acclaimed Harry McCoy series.
March 1941. Joseph Gunner, an ex-cop, arrives back in Glasgow on compassionate leave. His old boss Drummond persuades him to help investigate a body found in the wreckage of a bombed-out building. When the body turns out to be of a German, mutilated to disguise his identity, things get more complicated.
As Gunner investigates, another body appears and he discovers he's not the only one with an interest in the dead men. Two undercover secret service men are also in Glasgow. When he helps one of them, the eccentric Nickerson, out of a jam, he tells Gunner there is a reason the men look so similar. They have been chosen because they look like Rudolf Hess. They are spare lookalikes. With Nickerson's help, Gunner uncovers a plot by a section of the British Establishment to end the war by appeasement via a meeting with Hess a meeting so important that Hess is prepared to fly into Scotland. Gunner has to stop the meeting happening, and the future of the UK is at stake. But to stop it might well cost him his life
