HAMSTER MAGIC

Lynne Jonell

A debut chapter book, described as in the vein of Edward Eager's HALF MAGIC, features four siblings who move to a town where deep magic affects ordinary objects in surprising ways. In the first book of the series, the siblings discover their pet hamster, Hammy III, has been enchanted.
Celia Willow is the baby of the family, but she wishes she wasn't. She's sick of being younger and smaller. She's tired of never being taken seriously. So when her hamster develops some surprising powers, Celia knows exactly what she will wish for. The problem? Celia didn't exactly wish to be big and furry Her big brothers and sister can't let their parents see her like this, but they only have the night to fix things. How can Abner, Tate, and Derek reverse something as powerful as hamster magic before breakfast?

In the tradition of Edward Eager and E. Nesbit, Lynne Jonell's Hamster Magic is a high-spirited tale of mixed-up magic and wishes gone wrong, and the debut chapter book from the bestselling author of the Emmy & the Rat middle-grade series.

Lynne Jonell is the author of the popular books Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat and Emmy and the Home for Troubled Girls, both fantasies for 8-12-year-olds published by Henry Holt. She has also written seven picture books (Mommy Go Away!, I Need a Snake, It's my Birthday Too!, Let's Play Rough, Mom Pie, When Mommy Was Mad, and Bravemole), and is the illustrator of Bravemole as well, published by Penguin/Putnam. Her books have received starred reviews in PW, Horn Book, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, and Booklist, and have been published in seven languages. She has a husband and two sons, teaches writing at the Loft Literary Center, and lives in Plymouth, Minnesota.

There is something both appealing and remarkably nostalgic in this furry tale of cooperation among siblings and magical animals interacting with the human world. Fans of animal fiction will revel in Celia‘s nighttime antics ... This is a sweet, simple narrative that will appeal to fans of Marion Dane Bauer and those who like their animal tales with a touch of magic.
