HARMLESS

Dana Reinhardt

Best friends Anna, Emma and Mariah are three typical teenage girls . . . until one little lie changes everything. When the girls stay out past their curfew, they fear the punishments they will receive and they make up a story to cover their tracks. Each girl tells her parents that the three of them were attacked by a homeless man down by the river, but that they heroically defended themselves and escaped relatively unharmed. No big deal, right? Wrong. The school makes them into heroes. A local detective is skeptical and starts digging deeper into the story to find holes, while the town organizes marches to find the imaginary criminal. Finally, an innocent man is accused and brought to trial. What will it take to get the girls to tell the truth? And if a lie is told enough times, does it ever come true? Ages 12 and up.
