When Almanac and Etta receive invitations to a mysterious mansion, they are perplexed but cannot decline. For Almanac, who has spent his whole life in an orphanage, it's the only opportunity he has to find a new place to call home; and for Etta, anything is better than being forgotten and overlooked as the youngest of twelve boisterous sisters.

However, upon arrival, they find the mansion empty. Or so they think...there is nary another soul walking about, but the inhabitants can be heard at every turn, like Ugo, who won't come out of the chimney; or Olive, who lives in the boiler room and communicates through clanging pipes; or even Dr. Mithily, who speaks through the telephone to give Etta and Almanac instructions to find the library and venture into the cellar, but never reveals herself.

As Etta finds clues in the library's books and Almanac uncovers secrets among the cellar's artifacts, the truth becomes clear: the mansion's inhabitants are ghosts, trapped inside by a powerful spell that fights back at every turn. And to their horror, the perilous mansion is looking to add to its collection. If Etta and Almanac don't find a way to break the spell, they too will be trapped in the mansion...forever.

Sean Williams is one of Australia's most beloved and prolific authors.
