HEROISM BEGINS WITH HER
For readers of Rad American Women A-Z and Rebel Girls this a compilation of inspiring, fiercely patriotic, and empowering stories of courageous women in the US military throughout Americab history and how they have impacted the country.
Women have served in the military for centuries, risking their lives not only for their families, but for their country. And yet, the stories of bold, brave, and fearless female patriots are not often told or have been outshined by the heroics of male servicemen. Until now.
There is no heroism without her. By her, we mean women like Margaret Corbin, who followed her husband into battle during the American Revolutionary War and took up his canon when he fell. Or the woman who overcame racial prejudice and became the first Korean-American officer in the U.S. Navy. Her name was Lieutenant Susan AhnCuddy. There is also Major General Nadja West, who is alive oday. Though she was orphaned as a toddler, she went on to become the first female African American three-star general and the first black Surgeon General of the Army. Her story deserves to be told too. And many others, like Tammy Duckworth, Harriet Tubman, Kristen Griest and Shaye Haver, and more than 75 other important women.
This book features brief but powerful biographies about 82 gutsy American gals who fought, died, and lived for their country. Some stories might be well known. Others will be brand new. But all of them prove one thing: Women really can do anything.
Wiknifred Conkling has written more than 30 non-fiction books for adults and children. She earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Winifred lives in Northern Virginia with her family.
