HORSE BARBIE
A Memoir
A heartfelt and inspiring memoir from transgender Filipino beauty queen Geena Rocero.
From finding her femininity as an altar boy in the Philippines to the euphoria and anxiety of seeing her face on billboards and performing in a John Legend music video in lingerie, Geena's journey is filled with moments of authenticity and stealth, affirmation and denigration. With eloquence and bravery, Geena tells a story of perseverance and self-love that will surely resonate with readers everywhere.
In the Philippines, she found her place in trans pageants, events as widely attended and culturally significant as a national sport, going to high school by day and competing by night. When her competitors denigrated her with the nickname "horse barbie," due to her tumbling hair, long neck, and dark skin, she leaned into the epithet, stepping onto stage with undeniable charisma - part equine and all fashion. By eighteen, she'd become the Philippines' most prominent and highest-earning trans pageant queen.
When she moved to the United States, Geena was thrilled to have a new sense of freedom to be herself. She was able to change her name and gender marker on her documents, which still isn't possible for trans people in the Philippines. But legal recognition didn't come with guarantee of safety, even in the States. l. In order to survive, Geena and she went back in the closet, gaining one type of freedom and truth at the expense of losing another. Within a few years she'd become an in-demand model, appearing in music videos, billboards, and magazine campaigns. But as her star rose, her sense of Self, eroded. She craved acceptance as her authentic self, yet had to remain on the lookout for the way a hair-flip could betray her Adam's apple. The tenuous, high-stakes double life finally led Geena to a breaking point when she had to decide how to reclaim the power of Horse Barbie once and for all: radiant, head held high, and unabashedly herself.
Geena has connections across media, entertainment, fashion, and politics, including TED, Hello Sunshine, GLAAD, Miss Universe, the HRC, Jose Antonio Vargas, America Ferrera, dream hampton, Laverne Cox, Bozoma Saint John, Richard Branson, Esther Perel, Cameron Russell, Jo Koy, Justin Baldoni, Patrice Coullors, and Ronan Farrow. She has over 125K followers on social media. She is the award-winning producer of HLN/CNN's ASPIREist; LogoTV's "Beautiful As I Want to Be"; Fusion TV's "Willing and Able"; Fusion/Univision's "No League of Their Own"; and LogoTV/MTV/VH1's "Made to Model"; has spoken at the White House, World Economic Forum, United Nations, and Fortune 500 companies; and has been featured in countless magazines and media. She is the founder of Gender Proud, a media production company that tells stories about what it means to be trans and gender nonconforming.
