IDA B. THE QUEEN

Michelle Duster Hannah Giorgis

The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells

Biography of the journalist, civil rights leader, and suffragist Ida B. Wells.
In IDA B. THE QUEEN, Wells' great-granddaughter, professor and activist Michelle Duster, along with The Atlantic staff writer Hannah Giorgis, tells the story of Wells' remarkable life and contextualizes her legacy and impact on contemporary culture.

Born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Wells started her activism when she sued a railroad after refusing to give up her seat on a ladies' train car while commuting to Memphis in 1884. She would go on to work as a pioneering investigative journalist and newspaper publisher. She exposed the horrors of America's lynching culture as domestic terrorism and later became one of the founders of the NAACP. In 2020, she posthumously won a Pulitzer Prize.

A century after her death, Wells's genius is being celebrated in popular culture by politicians, through song, public artwork, and landmarks. Like her contemporaries Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony, Wells left an indelible mark on history - one that can still be felt today. As America confronts the unfinished business of systemic racism, Ida B. the Queen pays tribute to a transformational leader and reminds us of the power we all hold to smash the status quo.

Michelle Duster says: "After working on various projects for over 30 years, it is exciting to finally see my great-grandmother's sacrifice and legacy be fully recognized. Ida's life is well-known in some communities, but IDA B. THE QUEEN will introduce her to a wider and different audience. I hope her story will inspire people to live their own truths as Ida did."

Michelle Duster is a writer, speaker, professor, and champion of racial and gender equity. She has worked for several decades to elevate her great-grandmother's legacy. In the last dozen years, she has written, edited, or contributed to eleven books. She co-wrote the popular children's history book, Tate and His Historic Dream; co-edited Shifts and Michelle Obama's Impact on African American Women and Girls; and edited two books that include the writings of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. She has written for Essence, Refinery 29, Huffington Post, Teen Vogue and The North Star.
