LAZINESS DOES NOT EXIST

Devon Price

From social psychologist Dr. Devon Price, this is a critical (yet ultimately inspiring) examination of the "Laziness Lie," which tells us we are not working or learning hard enough, with advice on how to summon the inner-strength to overcome society's presssure to "do more."
Like many people, Dr. Devon Price learned at an early age to tie their self-worth to their productivity. Price was an overachiever from the start, graduating from both college and graduate school early, but that success came at a cost. After Price was diagnosed with a severe case of anemia and heart complications from overexertion, they were forced to examine what "productivity" and "self-worth" really meant.

In Defense of Laziness explores the psychological underpinnings of the "Laziness Lie," which tells us that we are not working hard enough, learning enough, or doing enough in our personal lives. Dr. Price explores the Lie's origins and explains how it has continued to proliferate as digital work tools have made the boundary between work and life thinner and thinner. Using empirical research, the book explains that people today do more work than nearly any other humans in history yet still feel they are not doing enough.

Dr. Price provides scientifically-backed reassurances that productivity does not determine a person's worth, and suggests that the solution to our problems of overwork and stress lie in learning to embrace laziness. Throughout the book, they offer strategies to help readers feel less guilt and shame over being "lazy", and exercises for becoming more attuned with one's own limitations and needs. The book features interviews with researchers, corporate consultants, and therapists and follows the lives of several real-life people who found themselves absolutely drowning in overwork, but who found the inner strength to overcome our culture's unending pressure to do more.

Dr. Devon Price is a social psychologist, writer, activist and professor at Loyola University. Price's work has appeared in numerous publications such as Slate, The Rumpus, NPR and The Huffington Post and has been featured on the front page of Medium numerous times.
