IN THE AFTER
Selected by Amamzon as one of the Best Books of the Year 2013.
This is a lead title for Harper in June 2013
Blending the brutality of The Road with the paranoia of The Hunger Games, IN THE AFTER is the first in a YA trilogy where vicious creatures roam the earth and the only sanctuary, a utopian compound, may turn out to be an even worse trap. Fourteen-year-old Amy is watching TV when it happens - when the Before becomes the After, when her neighborhood, her country, her world are overrun by the vicious creatures she learns to call Them. Marooned in her high-security house, she is able to survive when others can't, and soon rescues an abandoned 2-year-old she finds in a supermarket. "Baby" and Amy exist in fearful silence until an "alien ship" captures them and deposits them in New Hope, a survivors' colony built on a former government research facility. In New Hope, Amy receives the shock of her life: Her mother is not only alive, but she directs the colony. At first a dream with plentiful food, safety and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals itself as far from ideal with its rigid career tracks, punishments and forced procreation. The colony also harbors dark secrets, and when the creatures break in and slaughter over 900 residents, Amy realizes there is more going on than meets the eye. She must choose between everything she loves and freedom.
Sequel IN THE END published in June 2014.
