INTO EVERY GENERATION A SLAYER IS BORN

Evan Ross Katz

How Buffy the Vampire Slayer Staked Our Hearts

The oral history and exploration of the cultural impact of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the classic, ground-breaking television show still adored by fans old and new, from pop culture critic and lifelong devotee of the show Evan Ross Katz, social media's foremost Sarah Michelle Gellar historian.
Over the course of its seven-year run, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cultivated a loyal fandom and featured a strong, complex female lead, at a time when such a character was a rarity. In Into Every Generation, pop culture critic Evan Ross Katz will explore the show's history and cultural relevance through a book that is part oral history, part celebration, and part memoir of a very personal fandom that has universal resonance.

Following in the tradition of successful pop culture books about shows such as All the Pieces Matter, The Office, I'll Be There For You, and Seinfeldia, Into Every Generation covers the history and cultural impact of the show, while instilling a sense of nostalgia within its fans. Thanks to streaming, conventions, reunion events, and more, the Buffy fandom is alive and hungry to keep exploring their favorite show further. There has been a smattering of licensed books over the years, but nothing that gets at the show's real appeal like this book will. And Katz is well positioned with the platform to help promote the book to his 77K followers on Instagram and 41K on Twitter, as well as through his podcast, Shut Up Evan, where he speaks with many celebrities, such as Olivia Wilde and Rose McGowan.

Katz - with the help of the show's cast, creators, and crew - reveals that although the show contributed to important conversations about gender, sexuality, and feminism, it was not free of internal strife and controversy. Men - both on screen and off - would taint its reputation as a feminist masterpiece, and changing networks would drastically change the show's tone and the lives of its cast. How those disruptions impacted the show's production, the lives of its cast members, and, more broadly, pop culture will be examined and revealed.

Katz tackles many burning questions from the show that still remain unclear: Does Buffy really die? Why did it take so long for Willow and Tara to kiss? How did Sarah Michelle Gellar feel about the move toward making the show more sex-heavy? How were the crossover episodes with Angel devised?

As only an expert can, Katz's research extends beyond the screen and into the lives of the show's stars, both during and after the series' run. Katz draws from interviews with Buffy stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter, as they share thoughts on their characters as well as their experience working on the show. Katz addresses these issues and more, including interviews with stars Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Stewart Head, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, Bianca Lawson, Marc Blucas, K. Todd Freeman, Clare Kramer, Danny Strong, Julie Benz, Sharon Ferguson, and Tom Lenk; and writers Douglas Petrie, Drew Z. Greenberg, and Jane Espenson; as well as conversations with celebrity Buffy fanatics and friends of the cast including Stacey Abrams, Cynthia Erivo, Lee Pace, Claire Saffitz, Tavi Gevinson, and Selma Blair.

Evan Ross Katz is a writer and columnist best known as the world's expert on all things Sarah Michelle Gellar. Writer for the Netflix's The Most channel, his writing has also been featured in Paper, The Independent, Men's Health, MTV, The Observer, Oprah Magazine, Out, Playboy, Refinery29, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue, and Thrillist, among others. He is the host of the LGBTQ+ focused podcast, Shut Up Evan, which has featured celebrities such as Olivia Wilde, Rose McGowan, and Buffy alum, Charisma Carpenter.
