At the port of Algiers, Karl Marx is welcomed by a former Paris Commune fighter. But the days of Marx’s involvement in political struggles are over. In leaving Europe he has also left behind his past ideological battlefields, for his doctor has told him to avoid all intellectual exertion. What is left to him but to indulge in reminiscences? Drawing on extensive source material, some of it previously unpublished, Uwe Wittstock describes Marx’s months in Algiers and examines the life of a thinker who divides opinion like hardly any other. Some people put him on a pedestal, whilst others are quick to condemn him. We learn about Marx's wild student days in Bonn and Berlin, about his early poetic ambitions, about his unexpected role in the revolution of 1848 (where surprisingly, he acted as a brake), and about his permanent exile and the privations of poverty he suffered. Why did Marx remain politically isolated almost all his life, and why did he leave his magnum opus, ‘Das Kapital’, unfinished? Towards the end of his time in Algiers, Marx goes to the barber and gets his revolutionary’s beard cut off: a late withdrawal, perhaps?
