John Hunter was serving a life sentence in a Florida high security prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. But Hunter has been "modified." He no longer needs to pay for this crime. Truth is, he never should have been there to begin with because he never killed anyone. The State may think he's "modified," but Hunter needs to find out who put him there and who killed the woman he loved.

On the other side of the state, there's the young brash Bill Moore whose real estate career on Long Boat Key is on the rise, and he's making all the right moves with the in-crowd. Bill's got a plan and he's going up... fast.
Then a book arrives from Amazon, right to Bill's doorstep - not porn but something catering to those with more "specific" sexual tastes. His wife sees the book, which is an obvious mistaken order, of course, but an embarrassing one. But that's not nearly as troubling as the racist global email that he sends to family, friends and clients later that day... except he didn't send it! Then there are the missed appointments with David Warner, the owner of an $8 million house which may be up for sale - Warner says he wants to meet asap but is never there when Bill shows up. What is going on?

The oddest irritating things seem to be happening. But when Warner goes missing and Bill may be the last person to contact him, the police get interested in Bill Moore. Who the hell is telling the truth, who is toying with him? Bill Moore's life unravels, beginning with the mere suggestion of trouble. But when he comes home to find his wife gone and a badly mutilated body floating in his swimming pool, Bill's life takes a nasty turn for the worst and, as his agenda begins to dovetail with Bill Moore's. John Hunter wishes he had stayed in prison.
