LA GRANDE SETE

Erica Cassano

Anna is thirsty. The whole city is thirsty, drained by the war, and it has been for weeks.
Those days will be remembered as the Four Days of Naples. It's 1943, and water is scarce everywhere because of the bombings - except in the house where Anna lives with her family.

Outside the Miracle House, a line of women stretches on, all asking for just enough to stop their own thirst and that of their children. But Anna's thirst feels different: an unquenchable yearning for life and for a future of redemption.

At twenty, she dreams of studying at the Faculty of Humanities, of reading, and of living in a world free from war and destruction, without the constant threat of air raid sirens. Yet, there's no time for dreams. Her father has disappeared, her mother has withdrawn into herself, and her sister and nephew have fallen ill. Their future rests on her shoulders.

When the opportunity arises, Anna accepts a job as a secretary at the American base in Bagnoli, thanks to a young American soldier who seems to take a particular interest in her. She steps into a world she doesn't know, encountering people from a distant land brimming with opportunitiesa place that both enchants and unsettles her, filled with unspoken promises. New possibilities open up: to leave behind the painful years of war, to find a new path.

ERICA CASSANO was born in Maratea (PZ) in 1998. She holds a degree in Modern Literature and a Master's in Modern Philology from the Federico II University of Naples. She has lived in Paris and in Turin, where she attended a creative writing program. La Grande Sete is her debut novel.
