LAKESEDGE

Lyndall Clipstone

A young woman must break the curse on a mysterious estate in order to save the boy she loves, and the only home she has ever known.
There are monsters in the world.
Violeta Graceling has spent her life in an isolated cottage, trying to protect herself and her beloved younger brother Arien from their adoptive mother's twisted cruelty. A cruelty driven by the mysterious shadows that unwillingly spill from Arien's hands and infiltrate his dreams, spelling dark magic and an even darker underworld.

Violeta and Arien must escape their abusive home. Even if it means taking a position at the haunted estate of Rowan Sylvanan - the so-called "Monster of Lakesedge" - who comes seeking Arien's dark magic. The monster who, it is whispered, stalks the halls of his manor and the shores of the blackened, cursed lake.

There are monsters in the woods.
As Violeta investigates Lakesedge's tragic history, she discovers that prickly, standoffish Rowan is far from a monster. He is a boy, an orphaned Lord, not much older than she is. As their friendship turns into romance, Violeta learns the painful truth about Rowan's curse and his fateful bargain with the Lord Under - a death god who rules over the world Below - that sealed his fate and stole away everything he loved.

There's a monster in the shadows, and now it knows my name.
In order to save Rowan and Lakesedge - the only home Leta has ever known - Leta must strike her own bargain with the Lord Under. But it is not the first time Leta has struck a bargain with him, and as the two become increasingly intertwined, it becomes clear that the only way to save Rowan is for Leta to venture into the strange and dangerous world that lurks below Lakesedge's cursed waters.

This is a novel to fall deeply for. The prose is remarkable, and LAKESEDGE beautifully balances its immersive dark magic sysem with a captivating romance between Leta - the strongest of heroines - and Rowan, a tragic figure who is both mythic and heartbreakingly relatable.
But beyond the shadows and the lake and the sinister Lord Under, LAKESEDGE is ultimately the story of a girl - a girl who is tenacious and fiercely loyal and longing to come alive for the first time. Lyndall writes: 'I really wanted to capture my feelings of that time of life, where everything was excitingly new and emotions were so all-encompassing. I wrote LAKESEDGE for the girl I was at seventeen: fierce and foolish and willing to do brave things in the name of love.'

Lyndall Clipstone grew up running wild in the Barossa Ranges of South Australia. She attended the University of Adelaide, where she received a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Creative Writing. She spent many years as a youth librarian fostering a love of stories. She currently lives in Adelaide, where she tends to her own indoor secret garden.

Brooding and atmospheric.

Love beats at the heart of LAKESEDGE, but as our heroine fights for survival - hers, her brother's, and that of the monstrous boy who has drawn her into his secretive life - she discovers that to end a curse, love will demand sacrifice. With notes of LABYRINTH and THE SECRET GARDEN, Clipstone combines the best elements of gothic romance and horror into a debut novel that pulls readers under and doesn't let them up for air until the very last page.
