LET'S GO, FLO!

Rebekah Ballagh

Let's Go, Flo! is a fun, interactive story about a child overcoming her anxiety about attending school. Working on two levels, this story not only describes Flo's day but also highlights executive functioning skills used in a day-to-day setting. It also cleverly integrates coping strategies for kids to practice while reading.
On one level, this is a cute story about the day in the life of a girl: getting ready for school, going to school, missing her friends, going through the school day, getting home, helping to cook dinner, going to bed, and all the normal day-to-day challenges she faces and deals with in one busy day. On another level, all the things Flo encounters require 'executive functioning' skills: the ability to focus, pay attention, remember instructions and regulate emotions. Plus, it's an interactive book; for instance the reader is invited to inhale as they trace up an image and exhale as they trace down. There are also excellent resources in the back for parents, caregivers and teachers about executive functions and how to help your child with focus and memory and other key skills - parents and teachers will love this as a resource as much as the kids! In this book children will learn (through fun story telling) about these executive functioning skills: - Self-restraint/impulse control/emotional control - Flexible thinking - Planning and organisation - Stress tolerance - Working memory - Focus and observation - Time management - Achieving goals - Problem solving Readers help Flo pack her school bag, find focus in the classroom, tie her shoes, mix colours in art class, learn a breathing skill, cope with change, find ingredients to make dinner with Dad and get her ready for bed at the end of the day. Readers interact with the book to keep them engaged. Children will get to tap the pages to turn on night lights, search find Flo's teddy, remember ingredients to point out in the fridge, trace Flo's hand, turn the book upside to start a timer and lots more. It's important that children have opportunities to develop executive functioning and self-regulation skills - this leads to increasing independence, positive behaviours, a sense of autonomy and sets them up to be great learners. This book subtly allows children to learn and practice these skills without this being overtly obviously to them - learning happens best when it's fun!
