LIAR'S TEST

Ambelin Kwaymullina

A young woman must win the Queen's Test in order to destroy the kingdom that colonized her homeland in this thrilling Aboriginal YA Fantasy.
Win the crown. Destroy the kingdom. Bell Silverleaf is a liar. It's how she survived being held prisoner by the sun-priests - by keeping her head down, by telling them what they wanted to hear. But now she's out and she's got a shot at the crown. She is the only Treesinger in the Queen's Test, and no one expects her to win. But Bell has spent the last seven years learning how to stay alive in the Risen's world, and she has a plan to lie her way into becoming Queen of the Risen. But the Test doesn't go as planned, and as Bell faces rigged challenges and merciless saboteurs who'd like to see her gone, she uncovers that there is more to the Queen's Test - and to the queendom herself - than she thought. For it's not only humans who have a stake in the Test, but the so-called gods - the very beings who colonized Bell's world and shaped it for the Risen. Now, if Bell wants to be the victor - wants to help free her people - not only is she going to have to lie, but she's going to have to trust... in her friends, her ancestors, and her own destiny. And then she's going to come for the Risen's world the way they once came for hers. A brilliant new YA novel which invites readers into a richly drawn speculative world inspired by the author's culture and history as an Aboriginal person. It's fresh and twisty and poignant, a powerful take on colonialism and the often quiet strength of resistance. AUS: Text

An exciting fantasy tale of magic, friendship, and self-discovery, with poignant themes of colonization and cultural oppression that will captivate high school readers. Fans of Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen and Marissa Meyer's Cinder will be enthralled by this adventure of rebellion and the quest for freedom.

Tucked into a twisty, fast-paced narrative that explores legacies of colonialism are subtle messages about the ever-changing, symbiotic web of life.

A captive within the temple of the colonizers' sun god, Treesinger Bell Silverleaf believes that her ability to walk through memories holds the key to curing the sickness affecting her people. Her captivity comes to a surprising end when she is summoned to join a competition to become the next ruler. From fully anticipated treachery to unexpected allies, Bell knows that the trials will end in either her triumph or death. She's betting on her triumph though, and she isn't shy about telling the reader exactly that through narration that barely refrains from breaking the fourth wall. This conversational tone helps streamline the world building, which, though beautifully detailed, could easily seem unwieldy. This is ultimately a survival story that tackles huge issues, including the morality of working within a system to subvert that system, while simultaneously existing as a fantasy romp with a main character who is endearingly hones - at least, as far as the reader is concerned.
