LISETTE'S LIST

Susan Vreeland

A sweeping, panoramic novel set in Southern France about the power of art to heal.
A young bride moves with her new husband from Paris to Roussillon in Provence to take care of her ailing father-in-law just as World War II breaks out. Though at first she feels exiled from the sophisticated world of her beloved Paris, she comes to adore her father-in-law, who worked in the local ochre mines and knew Cezanne and Pisarro and has a small collection of paintings; and she herself meets the Chagalls, who are living nearby.

When her father-in-law dies and Lisette’s husband Andre is sent off to war, and the Chagalls flee Vichy France, she is desperate to find the paintings of those masters her husband has hidden to avoid theft by the Germans. During the war, Andre is killed and Lisette must make a real home for herself in the village and avoid the advances of a village prefect.

When Andre’s best friend from Paris, Max, returns from the war to help her look for the paintings, the novel becomes both a treasure hunt in a landscape that itself has riches to offer and a poignant love story.

Susan Vreeland is the New York Times bestselling author of THE GIRL IN HYACINTH BLUE and LUNCHEON OF THE BOATING PARTY, and most recently CLARA & MR. TIFFANY (Random House, January 2011). Learn more about her work at www.svreeland.com.

Une jolie Parisienne in Provence during the turbulent World War II years comes to understand love and great art to the core of her being…a sweeping historical novel…Vreeland, who has proven in earlier art-themed best-sellers that she has an exquisite eye for detail, is enormously talented at establishing the important societal role of art…her deeply researched novel is mesmerizing. Merveilleux. Vreeland's passionate writing is as good as a private showing at the Louvre.

Lisette’s List’s great strength is its lovingly detailed setting, a mountaintop village whose charm gradually enwraps the reader just as it does the initially resistant Lisette…Vreeland is entranced by color, artistic creativity and the transformative power of art…Readers will enjoy lingering in the sun-dappled, fruit-scented Provençal landscape that Vreeland brings to life.

Lisette's List is heartfelt, loving and lovely, and asks difficult questions beautifully.
