March of the Ten Thousand

Wolfgang Will

The Unbelievable History of an Antic Mercenary Army

Ten thousand Greek mercenaries are enticed into western Asia Minor by the Persian Prince Kyros. As the march begins it becomes apparent that his aim is to overthrow his brother, the great King Artaxerxes, and to put himself on the throne instead. The plan fails however when Kyros dies in the Battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC. It was now on the Greek army to get out of enemy country and back to safety.

Thanks to Xenophon we have a detailed description of events, written in the style of a war correspondent. When other leading Greek figures fell, he had to step up and embrace the task of conveying information about unknown peoples, the locations of ancient ruins, exotic landscapes, previously unknown flora and fauna, unusual dining and drinking traditions, not forgetting the sexual preferences. He wrote about the unusual composition of armies as well as about different people: women, children, courtesans, merchants, doctors, servants and prisoners. In exposing the war, this Socrates scholar doesn’t hold back with ethical issues and questions of appropriate moral conduct.
