The Joy and Deviance of Marsha P. Johnson

MARSHA is the definitive biography of Marsha P. Johnson, the inspiring and larger than life activist who fought for the rights of poor, Black, trans, and gender nonconforming people.
An award-winning artist, filmmaker, and activist, Tourmaline was just honored as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. Her most recent film, Salacia, was acquired by MOMA for their permanent collection. She's been featured in Vogue, Teen Vogue, Allure, W Magazine, and more and has produced advertisements for Marc Jacobs, Reebok, Dove, and more. Here, in Tourmaline's own words, is what publishing MARSHA means: "Publishing a joyful, inspiring, and accessible biography of Marsha that honors the fullness of her life will give this remarkable figure her rightful place in history. In her rapid journey from anonymity to counterculture symbol, many of her fascinating and salacious plot points have been lost along the way. It is time to tell the full story of Marsha P. Johnson, in all its messy, infinite, beautiful glory." And, of this book's inspirational message: "This book won't only educate readers about Black trans beauty, art, and survival, but also allow them to apply the pleasure and excitement of it in their own lives. Marsha isn't special because she had something special inside of herit was her proximity to her inner truth and her ability to live it that made her so special. Every reader has that inner truth inherently inside of them." Tourmaline is an award-winning artist, filmmaker, writer, and activist whose work is dedicated to Black trans joy and freedom. She is a TIME 100 Most Influential Person in the World awardee and a Guggenheim Fellow. She has frequently appeared on ABC News, as well as in the New York Times and Vogue. Her art is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate, and the Getty Museum. She created the critically acclaimed film Happy Birthday, Marsha!, and she has directed Pride campaigns for Dove, Marc Jacobs, and Reebok. She previously worked with Queers for Economic Justice and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. She lives in Miami, Florida.
