THE BEST AT IT

Maulik Pancholy

Rahul Kapoor is an Indian-American kid growing up in a small town in the suburbs of Indiana. Being a 12-year-old can be, well, confusing. Lately Rahul finds himself noticing that his classmate, Justin Emery, has some pretty sweet tan lines. But honestly, who wouldn’t? It doesn’t mean he’s…well, you know. Rahul is pretty sure he just wants to be like Justin Emery – not be his boyfriend. Obviously. Right?

On top of that, Rahul’s also got a feeling in the pit of his stomach that something is not quite right with his parents, but no one seems to be talking about what the problem is.  All this underlying anxiety in Rahul’s life has led to some weird compulsive patterns. When his favorite person in the whole world, his grandfather, catches him checking the door locks, Bhai tells him he just needs to relax. That in fact, everything would be all right if he just sets his mind to being the best at something.

The. Best. At. It. Those four little words sear themselves into Rahul’s brain. While a lot of things come pretty easily for him (except for any kind of sporting activity. Literally, no sports.), he’s unfortunately not quite sure what that one special thingis. He is, however, convinced that once he finds it, everything will be okay. His parents’ problems will disappear, bullies like Brent Miller will stop calling him a “flamer” at school, and being a scrawny, nerdy brown kid just won’t be an issue anymore. Armed with his Day-At-A-Glance Day planner, endless To-Do lists, and his best friend Chelsea by his side, Rahul will set out to find something to be the best at.
