MY ABSOLUTE DARLING
This debut coming-of-age novel of emotional daring and stylistic brilliance recounts the journey of a resilient fourteen-year-old girl. Turtle's father Martin is a reclusive autodidact, abusive and possessive. Turtle is a remarkable young woman who creates her life when everything is against her.
Turtle Alveston grows up in the thrall of her psychologically and sexually abusive father, Martin, a reclusive autodidact determined to prevent his daughter from escaping their sheltered dyad. The novel tracks Turtle’s fight for her own soul through acts of physical and emotional courage. She is an unforgettable character, psychologically complex, fierce, haunted, with steely determination and deep loyalty to the father who both controls her and teaches her.
The Mendocino Coast of the novel — its rocky beaches, cold springs, and second growth redwood forests — plays a crucial role in the story as the dominant experience of Turtle’s life. Tallent’s attention to the natural world and to the abject body in captivity gives the novel its ethical sensibility.
MY ABSOLUTE DARLING portrays this remarkable young woman’s self-creation when the odds are murderously against her.
Gabriel Tallent grew up in Mendocino, California. He attended the Mendocino Community High School and spent a lot of time backpacking, re-reading Greek tragedies, and trying to figure out MOBY DICK. Tallent received his BA from Willamette University and wrote his thesis on the discursive construction of pleasure in Samuel Richardson’s PAMELA. He lives in Salt Lake City, where he can be found climbing or futilely trying to identify plants in Little Cottonwood Canyon. His stories have been published in Narrative and in the St Petersburg Review.
