Basic Rights in Quarantine
In the fight against the corona pandemic, states around the world are taking measures that would otherwise only be conceivable in times of war. Unprecedented restrictions on freedom are being imposed . But the current emergency is one thing, the commandments of the Basic Law another. Can everything work with Corona? Do basic rights also have to be quarantined in order to defeat the virus?
In his new book, Heribert Prantl tells of life in a state of emergency and the lessons learned from it. He measures the tension between necessity and commandment. Fundamental rights do always apply, even in the event of a disaster, especially then. If fundamental rights had to give way in times of need, they would not be fundamental. Fear of the virus must not lead to their abolition.
Not every restriction of freedom is also a violation of fundamental rights. Politicians must weigh up the pros and cons, be moderate and use proportionate means. They have to protect citizens from the virus and at the same time from damage to the democratic system. Prantl's book shows how politics are influenced by fear. But it also shows how a good future can be built by reflecting on fundamental rights and values. This is a warning against new nationalism and the poison of populism.
