NO SON VACACIONES

Olivia Gallo

"A novel where beauty progressively turns into hell." Mayra Andrade, Big Bang
Catalina, a young woman accustomed to urban geometry, is haunted by a restlessness: life in the city and the limitations imposed by her past stifle her. She decides to take a trip to the south and visit the childhood home of her boyfriend, Juan, with the aim of planning a new life there together. But the landscape that expands in front of her, the people she meets and the changes in their relationship will destabilise aspects of her life that she thought had been resolved and will make her follow paths that were previously untravelled, which will lead her to review her present, past and future in a space of unexpected beauty and hostility. Olivia Gallo (Buenos Aires, 1995) is a writer. She has been shortlisted for the Granta's Best Young Spanish Writers selection, presented in Spring 2021. Her first published work is the collection of short-stories Las chicas no lloran, originally publised in Argentina by Tenemos las máquinas (2019), and issued in Spain by Alpha Decay (2022). In 2023 she publishes her first short novel, No son vacaciones (Blatt & Ríos, 2023).

Comments

I love Olivia Gallo's stories: I think she has a very languid, minimal style, where nothing seems to happen but it does. And in an age of big activists and concepts in capital letters, one appreciates talent with subtlety.
