OLD ROCK (IS NOT BORING)

Deb Pilutti

Quirky charm infuses this tale of Old Rock's life story, which is much more exciting than you'd expect.
Old Rock's neighbors think just sitting there must be boring. Hummingbird zips to far away lands, Spotted Beetle explores the forest, and Tall Pine sways in the wind, but Old Rock can't do anything.

"I flew once," said Old Rock.

Thus begins Old Rock's life story from shooting out of a volcano, riding in a glacier, helping dinosaurs hide, and all the way to enjoying life with neighbors in this clearing very much. Not boring at all.

WONDERFUL LIFE LESSON: Through Old Rock's tales, the other forest creatures learn that just because someone's life is different from yours, it doesn't mean it's any less meaningful, fun, or interesting.

STEM GOLD: Old Rock highlights many stages of Earth's development and a fun timeline illustrates them in the backmatter.

CONVERSATION STARTER: This heartfelt story about not judging by appearances, appreciating small pleasures, and the joy found in stories about the past will inspire meaningful conversations between generations and curiosity about others' perspectives on things that can be more interesting than you'd think.

FRESH, STRIKING ARTWORK: Deb Pilutti masterfully creates warm, engaging characters through accomplished line work and vibrant colors.

Deb Pilutti is the illustrator of six picture books, three of which she also wrote. The story of Old Rock started with a drawing of a silly rock that Deb couldn't stop thinking about, even though she originally thought rocks were boring. Deb lives with her family in Michigan.

This is a wonderful story about mistaken assumptions, and taking the time to listen to a variety of perspectives and experiences. Part scientific history, part storytelling, Old Rock is content with his lot in life, and Old Rock is not boring! This is a brilliant book for school and public libraries and one that children will be drawn to.

Pilutti puts a smile and wide eyes on the rock and places it among an increasingly fascinated animal audience in a set of simply drawn, usually idyllic cartoon scenes. 'They are not bored,' she concludes, nor will younger readers and listeners be once they realize that every rock they see has a similar story to tell.

A witty, engaging exploration of deep time... This picture book rocks!

After Hummingbird, Spotted Beetle, and Tall Pine regale Old Rock with tales of their adventures, Old Rock relays a rich history in which he was shot from a volcano, hid dinosaurs from predators, survived an ice age, traveled frozen in a glacier, and rolled onto plains populated with mastodons. This readaloud will put any of Grandpa's long-winded stories into perspective, as Old Rock really does have some valuable tales to offer.
